Getting a First Storyboarding GigThis question came in from Twitter today: "How would I go about getting a first storyboarding gig?" I thought I'd put my answer on the blog so others can read it too. Here it is:
When I was starting out I had absolutely no idea how to look for work myself. It ends up being different for everybody. The big thing when I was starting out was to make sure LOTS of people saw my work. This was before the Internet got started, so I was working on my college newspaper, making comics and showing them off at conventions. It was meeting a Ren & Stimpy director at a convention that helped me get my start. He liked my comics, and he told me all about how storyboarding for TV works.
The main thing that helped me get started was that I got my work OUT THERE where people could see it. That's a million times easier to do now than ever before; no publishing costs too get your work see by countless people through blogs and Facebook and Twitter, etc.
Here's a crazy story: last year I came across a guy on
Animation Portfolio's and Demo Reels..:iconDemonysh: and I have been talking about things like tutorials, and journal posts about what it's like, or some of the ways to get into the animation industry. She's gone ahead and posted her side with some insight for potential character designers. You can find her journal post over [here].
What I get asked about the most is how one can prepare, or educate themselves for a career as an animator. This is a VERY long winded conversation, with many facets. I don't want to bore everyone with a massive wall of text here, so I will focus on probably the most important part. -- The part about finding a JOB (either after graduating from animation school, or coming in from another position) as an animator.
THE DO'S and DON'TS OF DEMO REELS AND ANIMATOR PORTFOLIOS
-= The pitfalls to avoid, and get you that job (to pay off those phat student loans) =-

WHAT TIME IS IT? AAAADVENTURE TIME COSPLAY ...TIMEAdventure Time cosplay at Fantasy Quest 2
A couple of weeks ago, we attended an event called Fantasy Quest 2. (The very first Fantasy Quest was when we cosplayed Harry Potter characters.)
It was a pretty special day for us because four years ago, we had our first shoot and bonding day with Ysabel SavingSunlight at the venue, Fernwood Gardens.
We've been really into Adventure Time, so many months ago we decided we'd do AT cosplay, and that Fantasy Quest would be a fun opportunity to do so. It feels weird how we had been looking forward to this event for ages, and now it's over!

"A good animator combines all these qualities"Good draftsmanship
Knowledge of caricature, not only features bu also movement/action
Knowledge and appreciation of acting
Ability to think up gags and (execute) them
Knowledge of story construction and audience values
Knowledge and understanding of all the mechanical and detailed routine involved in their work, in order that they may be able to apply their other abilities without being tied up in a knot by lack of technique along those lines."
- a letter from Walt Disney to a co-worker in the industry, concerning the need for training new animators.
I went to the Disney Family Museum yesterday and it was amazing, I learned a TON and... as you can see, also took notes. C': Thought I'd share this list with you guys, since I know a lot of my watchers aspire to be animators.
I SAY GOOD LUCK TO YOU, MAY YOU ALL GO FAR IN YOUR PURSUIT OF YOUR DREAMS.
Just keep in mind you won't get there without being able to ap
Time and (artistic) greatness, pt. 1Sorry, I'm on vacation this week and feeling a bit introspective so this will be a long one. Also, I just uploaded a bunch of animation drawings I did while I was at Disney some ten years ago and that has gotten me nostalgic also. Then, I went for a run, which jelled it all together to this mess. Here we go:
We all want to be a LEGEND. We all want to be the best artists EVER. When I was young, I looked up to the BEST- Frank Frazetta, Walt Kelly, John Byrne, Charles Schulz, Jack Davis, Norman Rockwell and on. Not because I drew like them, but because they had something beyond just being able to draw well, they were LEGENDS. As I matured (okay, got older is more accurate), I started noticing other artists, Great and Good artists. Some were a notch better than me, some were several notches better. But those artists began to be the ones I looked at more often. I st
Time and (artistic)Greatness, pt. 2If you havent read part one, please do so before reading this. (http://tombancroft.deviantart.com/journal/39360109/)
I mentioned that I believe there are three levels of artists that we look up to: the Good, The Great, and the Legends. We all want to be one of them one day. The thing is, those artists never know when the transition from one level to the next. Its really up to their fans/ fellow artists/ watchers to make that distinction. The artists themselves just keep working and pushing themselves. That leads me to my first thought on how to become GREAT: always be pushing yourself to become better. Even the LEGENDS were rarely happy with their work. Think of Norman Rockwell. Ive read many stories of how he would throw away half painted paintings or redo ones that were already completed. He knew he could do better. The key here is that as they grew as artists, they could SEE more and more flaw

CARTOON SECRETSSSSSSSSSSSSSS (Part One)I get about a million emails a day asking me how to get into animation, and what schools and whatnot. And since I’d hate for amazing artists to end up doing something they hate for the rest of their lives when all they need was a few tips and some secrets and support… I'll try to do those things.
My parents drilled into me that artists can't make a decent living. They wanted me to be a bizzzzzznesss maaaan. Really bad. But I would have rather been homeless.! A homeless adventurer...
I hoped to figure out some way to have adventures and do art and scrape by. I spent about six years traveling around hopping trains, exploring jungles in South America and working on fishing boats. Traveling and writing and drawing and painting. I wanted to turn that somehow into illustrated adventure books... but I never finished anything.
I tried to settle down and go back to
Life is but a DreamWe are just unnourished frail bodies,
overfed with white lies and short-lived-euphorias.
Books filled with black letters,
etching lurid images into our utmost dreams.
Veering us from the big picture...
the one we fail to paint ourselves.
Our fists much too busy with fights,
that we are bound to lose.
Too occupied in line waiting,
for creativity to be let loose like a stray dog.
As if we will find home in this pursuit of happiness...
but we only enclose each other in small rooms
with nothing but old laptops.
How many times I've guessed which letter could it be...
Which letter could it be?
To free us from havoc-stricken-thoughts?
They come and go, unending like 24 hour subway stations.
There's no break for this lonely man,
heaving every breathe of stale air
into my overused lungs...
Living in confined walls of flesh
held up with brittle paper-mache bones.
Which day is it that I will burst out from this cage of a life?
And hover with the Gods found in carefully binded bo
