SpongeBob Final Holiday Cover

The last cover for the last issue of Nickelodeon Magazine. Very sad to see the magazine close its doors, but I'm happy that I got the chance to work with so many great people at Nick Mag for the last 13 years.

This is the original version of the painting that I sent in to the magazine, before all the text overlays and color adjustments...

Cartooning and Drawing Books I Use and Recommend

Fri Nov 20, 2009, 10:30 PM
In light of the tutorials I've been posting, I've gotten some questions about recommended drawing books. I certainly don't want to suggest that you need all of these...I just want to answer the question of which have been most helpful to me. The most important thing is to live and observe a lot, draw what you love and learn from the artists you admire!

Here's a collection of the drawing and cartooning books that have helped me the most:

Drawing and Cartooning:
Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm [link]
Cartooning the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm [link]
How to Draw Stupid by Kyle Baker [link]
You Can Draw Cartoons by Lou Darvas [link]
Action Cartooning by Ben Caldwell [link]
Cartoon Animation by Preston Blair [link]
Preston Blair (FREE version online) [link]
How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way [link]
Famous Artists Cartooning Course PDFs [link] (FREE downloads...make sure to "right-click and save" on the PDF links when you get there)

Animals:
How to Draw Animals by Jack Hamm [link]
The Art of Animal Drawing by Ken Hultgren [link]

Anatomy:
Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist [link]

Perspective:
Perspective Drawing Handbook [link]

Animation:
Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams [link]
The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation [link]

Most of these books have been popular for years and have around for so long that you should be able to get them from the library. I do it all the time! They're ALL still in print...the Jack Hamm books are from the early 1960's, but they're still in stores. The Marvel book is from the 70s, but still selling strong. Lou Darvas book...from the 50's but still in print from Dover. The Ben Caldwell and Kyle Baker books are from the last few years.

If your local library doesn't have them , you can ask and they will import it from another library. I'm tellin' ya...I do this all the time. They get them...you just have to ask ^_^

I would LOVE to hear from you about which books, websites or classes have helped you the most with your drawing or painting!

Have you ever seen the character Earl from the Sega Genesis game 'Toejam and Earl?' I've always noticed a large resemblance between him and Patrick. Just curious.

Hi Evan...no, I had never seen Toejam and Earl before, but I just looked it up now. There is quite a resemblance! Maybe they were separated at birth ;)
